The winners of Azure Magazine’s 2011 AZ Awards were announced last night and molo’s softlighting system won the award for best lighting design.
softlight is a family of lighting elements made from flexible honeycombed textile. Two variations of softlight are produced: urchin softlight, a floor or tabletop light source, and cloud softlight, which can be suspended as individual pendants or as multiple pendants on a mobile. Both cloud and urchin use the same honeycombed body.

urchin softlight has an animate, tactile character, inviting interaction. The three dimensional honeycomb geometry can transition through a series of organic forms as it is rotated through and around its centre. Changing the form changes the quality of light.

cloud softlight is assembled using three segments of the urchin body joined together with concealed magnets and supported internally by a flexible armature, which gives the light its cloud-like shape.
Winners were selected by an international jury and the awards were presented at Toronto’s Harbourfront Centre.
