paper softwall is a freestanding space partition and modern room divider that has the flexibility to be shaped in any curved or linear formation. When stored compressed, the folding wall shrinks to the thickness of a book. It expands to an impressive 15 feet (4.5 meters) long or any length between. Made from layers of paper structured with flexible honeycomb geometry, the walls are a new building material—relinquishing more rigid notions of space-making in favour of sustainable design that accommodates change over time and encourages responsible material use.
This easily moveable wall can be arranged as a room divider to absorb sound and create visual privacy or as a striking backdrop for an event or performance. As a modular system, each softwall + softblock has magnetic end panels that connect these flexible building blocks to create longer partitions and immersive, sculptural installations.
Recognized for innovation and elegant sculptural beauty, softwall is in the permanent collection of the New York Museum of Modern Art and has won several awards, including the prestigious Danish INDEX Award for Design to Improve Life.

Recyclable / responsible materials · the paper used for brown, deep blue, and glacier blue softwall is made from wood harvested from FSC® Certified (FSC® C158591) responsible sources. The material is treated with non-toxic fire retardant and inks, then structured in layers to create freestanding, flexible partition walls.Efficient use of material · when fully expanded, each softwall and softblock is 99% air and can easily be flat-packed for efficient storage and shipping. Light in weight and high in strength, the honeycomb allows the portable folding walls to be spontaneously rearranged to transform space.Flexible use of space · enabling a space to suit diverse use over time, throughout the day or over its lifespan, is a core concept of the soft collection and an inherently sustainable practice. softwall + softblock requires no tools or additional supports to create freestanding structures, and is easily folded away for storage or reconfigured. walls with magnetic connectors
The final layer of softwall + softblock is a multifunctional magnetic panel that folds vertically on itself to provide stability and sculptural harmony. When closed, it forms an uninterrupted rhythm of vertical lines.The concealed magnets in the end panels also connect multiple walls and blocks to one another, or can be used to anchor the elements to any solid wall, cabinet or column made of ferrous steel or to molo’s steel strip accessory.
colour
The optics of light bouncing back and forth within the pleated surface intensifies the colour saturation and shadows of the actual paper colour. Context, lighting conditions, and arrangement all play a role in the lively shift of colour tone and depth, transforming a single colour into a range of hues.There is a natural warmth to brown paper, with a wonderful ochre undertone. Deep blue paper reveals rich, inky shadows and the quiet luminosity of twilight. Uplifting and joyful, glacier blue balances sky and water, with subtle translucency that glows with the ephemeral quality of a glacier crevasse. Bamboo charcoal ink is used to dye the black paper, a deep, saturated black.
modular wall system
paper softwall + softblock is a modular system of flexible space partitions with standard heights ranging from 1 – 8 feet tall (30.5 – 244 centimetres). Elements can be stacked vertically or connected horizontally by their magnetic end panels, making it possible to create endless lengths and impressive heights by layering and linking walls and blocks to shape immersive environments.
hook for softwall
For storage or cleaning, an optional stainless steel hook can be used to hang compressed paper or textile softwalls from a solid wall or cabinet.
felt handle + anchor strip
The anchor strip accessory is made of white powder-coated steel and connects the magnetic end panel of softwall to solid surfaces like drywall or millwork. When paired with a felt handle, it creates a sliding door reminiscent of shōji.
GMUND paper
The deep blue and glacier blue papers are produced in partnership with Gmund, a storied German manufacturer that has been producing paper for nearly 200 years. Working in close collaboration with Stephanie Forsythe and Todd MacAllen, GMUND has developed new papers that balance rigorous technical and sustainability requirements with the more poetic sensibilities of the collection.
