As workspaces and homes become more multifunctional, the way we define space has begun to change. Open plans invite greater creativity, but without the option of thoughtful boundaries, they can feel undefined. Room dividers offer an adaptable response for these modern environments. By adding temporary room dividers, we can cultivate spaces that balance openness and flexibility with structure.

Fostering a greater sense of well-being at work and home is something we can accomplish through design. By making mindful choices of how we construct spaces, considering things like light, colour, texture, acoustics, and privacy, we can create healthier environments. How do we do this without tearing down walls and changing foundations? The simple addition of temporary furniture, like room dividers, can make a profound difference.

At molo, we believe room dividers are more than secondary accessories. These temporary partitions are spatial tools that help organizations work more intentionally, shaping how people move, concentrate, and connect throughout the day. In small apartments and open concept homes, wall room dividers provide creative intrigue and spatial definition without minimizing feel. Overall, an aesthetic and environmentally sustainable room divider does more than provide definition – they can be used to curate a space that benefits our well-being.

optimized office spaces

In open concept offices or smaller workspaces, there are a variety of factors that can be counterintuitive for productivity. The lack of boundaries can be distracting, and without separated rooms, spaces can become loud and busy.

Conceived as more collaborative and flexible, we’re learning that a space without defined boundaries has its challenges. For workers who are sensitive to sounds or have neurodivergent conditions, an open space may feel overwhelming. Without privacy and separation, studies have shown that collaboration actually decreases. In many cases, workers were more emotionally exhausted, took more sick days, and reported more anxiety about being in the office.

Paper room dividers are particularly well suited to small office spaces for a variety of reasons. Temporary walls allow teams to creatively construct spaces that work for them, configuring areas that suit work flow from day to day. In many cases, our clients have used softwall room dividers to create lounge areas for meetings and meals, or for private projects where confidentiality is needed. Having access to these aesthetic room dividers allows for teams to see their given space with more creativity. If an office worker has control over their environment, they tend to be more satisfied as a result.

An easy-to-install solution can have wide-ranging effects. Offering more than just increased functionality, softwall gives power back to the occupants of a space as they creatively find new and interesting ways to exist within it.

defining boundaries

As we look at evolving needs in work and life, an open concept space can still be an ideal foundation – a blank canvas that reconfigures according to our needs. By using temporary furniture and room dividers, we can consistently find the best solutions for our spaces.

Doing more than providing defined boundaries, room dividers can also affect how a space feels emotionally. A report from the World Green Building Council found that an optimized work environment can boost productivity up to 23%, and significantly improve health and wellness. Everything from interior layout, “look and feel,” lighting, acoustics, and thermal comfort have profound effects on how individuals work. It’s clear that an intentionally designed space is about more than aesthetics – it’s about environments that consider human needs.

A simple room divider selected in a neutral, calming, or energizing colour, can affect mood and mindsets. For instance, blue can promote greater creativity and innovation, whereas a forest green tone will foster a sense of calm. When used to create separate areas, the softness of the material also helps absorb sound to create helpful quiet zones that are conducive for working.

A multi-sensory experience, each softwall and softblock is designed to engage with sound, light, and colour in constructive ways. An intersection between functionality and form, they infuse an open space with life and personality.

shaping light and lines

A common assumption in smaller spaces is that adding walls or furniture will create a dark, confined feeling. However, items like a room divider will shape sightlines, reflect light, and introduce contrast. Clarifying a room’s composition and heightening the perception of a space, a thoughtfully placed room divider will bring much-needed organization and visual guidance. Light can be shaped with more intention, certain areas or surfaces can be hidden, and zones appear larger.

In compact layouts, the use of temporary walls are helpful to create larger spatial dimensions. In the making of our room dividers, we select light-reflective textiles and luminous tones because of their ability to scatter both daylight and artificial illumination across surfaces. By reducing harsh shadows, these materials increase perceived openness. Light is redistributed, softening stark interiors and making the overall environment feel more balanced and airy.

Made from structured honeycomb paper or nonwoven textile, softwall defines zones without any visual weight. Because these room separators do not anchor to floors or ceilings, they also preserve spatial fluidity, allowing light to travel more freely throughout the room while still carving out separate areas of use.

designed with intent

When working with a small space, every detail matters. At molo, function and purpose are inseparable, and each softwall room divider is designed with your space, the environment, and longevity in mind.

Behind every molo piece is a commitment to ethical production, material integrity and responsible processes. We are proud to work with a group of select manufacturers who share our values, allowing us to create products that meet the highest standards of your lifestyle.

Moving alongside you and shifting with daily needs, we understand that each piece has to hold up through continued handling and use. Crafted with materials that both resist change and develop character over time, they are the ideal companions for spaces that evolve all the time.

sustainability

Even colours are carefully considered, as each softwall hue is selected for its lightfastness. Staying true to tone even as it ages, these colours develop a patina over time that enhances its beauty and function within your space. We also consider how each colour will benefit your well-being, developing our main collection in a range of hues that are documented to promote a sense of focus, relaxation, and creativity.

To support thoughtful decision-making, we provide comprehensive documentation across all products, including fire ratings, acoustic performance, sustainability data, and lightfastness testing. This transparency ensures that every object you choose for your space will add value for years to come.

explore space partitions

When working with smaller, open spaces, there’s little room for extras that don’t offer a practical solution and an aesthetic contribution. Every piece becomes an integral part of the design. At molo, we understand the need for mutli-functional objects that enhance a user’s life by making it easier. Our room dividers and space partitions are designed to complement any space, whether they are left out as regular fixtures or used for occasional meetings and gatherings.

Accommodating change over time, room dividers are a thoughtful solution for companies, families, and teams that are evolving. Environments become defined without losing adaptability, while occupants can create the nooks they require for focus, relaxation, or play. Rather than closing spaces off, a room divider provides creative flexibility for a space to become whatever necessary, season after season.

In this sense, room dividers are not simply about separation. They are about designing spaces that support how people actually work and live.
